Unlocking Optimal Health by Releasing Stored Trauma— Why Somatic Therapy Could Be the Missing Piece in Your Healing Journey

We often think of trauma as something that affects our minds—but the truth is, trauma lives in the body.

In functional medicine, we look beyond symptoms to find the root cause. And sometimes, the root cause isn’t just what’s in your labs—it’s what your body has been holding onto for years.

Unprocessed trauma and chronic stress can become “stored” in the nervous system and tissues, leading to dysregulation across multiple systems:
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Autoimmune flares
  • Gut-brain axis dysfunction
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Chronic pain and fatigue
This is where somatic therapy comes in. Unlike traditional talk therapy, somatic approaches work directly with the body’s nervous system to help release stored tension, survival responses, and suppressed emotions.

The Science Behind It
  • Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) have been linked to a 2- to 3-fold increased risk of developing autoimmune conditions, according to a 2009 study in Psychosomatic Medicine.
  • Somatic Experiencing® has been shown to reduce PTSD symptoms and improve autonomic regulation (Frontiers in Psychology, 2017).
  • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy not only reduces trauma symptoms but can also reduce inflammatory markers like IL-6 and cortisol in trauma survivors.
  • Psychedelic-assisted therapy, especially with MDMA or psilocybin in clinical settings, has demonstrated the ability to help the brain reprocess trauma and significantly improve emotional and physical well-being (MAPS studies, Nature Medicine, 2021).
Why It Matters for Autoimmunity and Chronic Illness
When the nervous system is stuck in a state of fight, flight, or freeze, the immune system can become dysregulated. This chronic state of perceived threat can:
  • Increase systemic inflammation
  • Disrupt immune tolerance (a key player in autoimmunity)
  • Impair digestion and detoxification pathways
  • Suppress restorative processes like sleep and hormone production
In other words, you can't heal a dysregulated body without first addressing a dysregulated nervous system.

Full Moon Practice for Nervous System Release
The full moon is a powerful time to let go—energetically, emotionally, and physically. Try this simple somatic release ritual during the June full moon:
  • Set the mood: Dim lights, light a candle, play calming music.
  • Ground your body: Sit or lie down, barefoot if possible. Bring awareness to the weight of your body and take 10 deep belly breaths.
  • Body scan + breath: Slowly scan from head to toe. Where are you clenching, bracing, or holding tension? Exhale slowly and imagine melting that area.
  • Somatic shaking: Stand up and gently shake your hands, arms, shoulders, hips, and legs—letting your body release without overthinking it.
  • Let it go: Say out loud (or journal): “I release what no longer serves me—physically, emotionally, energetically.”
Bonus: Take an Epsom salt bath after to calm your nervous system and support detox.
